What Takes Root in the Dark
November 8 at 11:02 p.m. PST
Some beginnings arrive before there is anything to show for them. A decision forms privately. A desire becomes difficult to dismiss. Something long avoided asks for an honest answer.

The New Moon at 16°53′ Scorpio draws attention to what carries emotional charge: desire, intimacy, trust, grief, and the ties that are difficult to loosen. Feelings kept private may press for expression. A longing grows stronger. Anger exposes a boundary repeatedly crossed. Beneath jealousy or resentment, a need for affection, honesty, or change may become clear.
Scorpio brings the appetite to understand these feelings deeply. Their intensity can sharpen perception, though it can also make a fear feel like a certainty. There is value in staying curious long enough to distinguish a present need from an old hurt.
An opening can be small: a spontaneous smile, a moment of affection, pleasure returning unexpectedly. Circumstances may remain unresolved while the heart begins to respond again. That return of feeling can bring fresh energy to an intention taking shape.
The conditions for growth
A seed draws on what surrounds it. The quality of the soil matters, as do moisture, warmth, and time. Human beginnings need conditions of their own.
A relationship may need greater honesty before trust can deepen. A creative undertaking may need protected hours and a willingness to work without immediate recognition. A financial commitment may need clearer terms. Desire alone cannot supply every condition for growth, but it can reveal where attention belongs.
Some beginnings draw their authority from an inner conviction. An idea takes form because someone chooses to trust it, develop it, and accept responsibility for its care. The impulse to create and the capacity to nurture belong together.
Scorpio asks for a close look at the exchange. What nourishes? What depletes? Where has loyalty become an obligation that can no longer be sustained? What has remained unspoken for fear of losing closeness?
The answers may be complicated. Affection can coexist with resentment. Grief can accompany relief. A meaningful commitment can still need to change.
Before the words come
Mercury remains retrograde in Scorpio at this New Moon, while Venus continues her retrograde in Libra. Both turn direct on November 13. Conversations about trust, reciprocity, money, and affection may still be finding their language.
There is value in leaving room for another answer. An intention can be sincere while its practical form remains unfinished. Something first understood as a desire to leave may become a need for different terms; something dismissed as nostalgia may reveal a pleasure worth reclaiming.
Privacy offers space to listen before making a declaration. Movement can give restless energy somewhere to go. Time in nature can restore perspective. Journaling can make room for feelings that are difficult to speak aloud. These simple practices offer ways to channel the Moon’s potency toward understanding, release, and renewal.
A beginning to tend
The planting of intention can unfold over several days. In my practice, the three days before and after the New Moon feel especially potent. The waning crescent offers space to release, listen, and prepare the soil. As the waxing crescent emerges, the intention seeded in darkness can receive its first tangible act of care.
An intention can grow from this emotional clearing. Name the need, examine the agreement, make room for the work. Choose something that can be tended beyond the intensity of the moment.
Perhaps the beginning is a boundary. Perhaps it is a conversation approached with greater care. Perhaps it is allowing a long-held desire to matter enough to make a place for it.
What takes root in the dark will eventually ask for light, nourishment, and attention. For now, there is the first honest recognition—and the decision to care for what follows.
